SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE

A couple of months ago, my parents set aside some boxes for me to go through. Most of them were filled with old papers, school books and pictures. I rolled my eyes when they asked me to go through the boxes, because I didn't want to sift through a bunch of junk.

I'm not a packrat, but I do tend to save special cards and notes from my family and friends. While going through one of the boxes, I came across this card:

The card says:
"Dearest Katie, Sorry this is late. The thought is something old and something new. The old is a necklace grandpa gave me. The thought it should belong to you. It will be a memory for you of your graduation and of us. Love and Gods blessing, Grandpa and Grandma."
This note is from my maternal grandmother, who passed away a couple of years ago. As soon as I read the note, I knew I had my "something old" for my wedding. I'm going to have this necklace sewn into my bouquet:

While I'm sad that my maternal and paternal grandmothers won't physically be there on my wedding day, I know that they'll be with me spiritually and I know they'll be smiling when I walk down that asile and marry J.

What Drives Me Batty!

My sister M told me a funny story a couple of weeks ago. She woke up in the middle of the night, and her husband was breathing loudly. She nugged him and asked him to stop breathing so loud. His response:

“You want me to stop breathing….something I need to do to live?”

Everybody has pet peeves. Whether it’s someone else breathing loudly or smacking their chewing gum, we all have those things that we find particularly annoying.

When you start dating someone, you don’t see any of those pet peeves right away. As the dating progresses and you spend more time together, pet peeves tend to creep into relationships.

J and I have pet peeves about one another. I think his main pet peeve with me, is that I have road rage. I use my horn and I tend to use words that a lady should never say. I’m working on this, and I’m happy to report I’ve gotten better in the past couple of months.

My main pet peeve with J, is this:

I HATE when dishes are stacked in the sink—or directly next to the dishwasher. It makes no sense to me. If you’re making an effort to bring the dish into the kitchen, why not put it in its proper place? J’s definitely getting better at putting his dishes in the dishwasher, but there’s the occasional glass of water that stays next to the sink for a day or two.

I’m sure throughout our marriage, J and I will develop more pet peeves about one another—and guess what? It's completely normal!

The Dress

Back in August, I went dress shopping with my mom and my sister M (also the maid-of-honor). My sister M had done some legwork before we ventured to the store. As my sister, she knows what I like. She knows what looks good on my body and she’s brutally honest, in a good way.

I told M what styles I favored, and she found some pictures. Well, after I reviewed the pictures I called the daughter of the owner of the dress shop and asked her to set aside some dresses that would be similar to the styles M had found on-line. I told her I wanted absolutely NO beading and NO lace. It’s just not my style. I like simple and classic lines and I wanted it to be elegant and timeless.

When I walked into the room to try on dresses, the salesgirl informed me that the owner called the designer and he sent a sample of the dress I liked on-line. I immediately tried it on and LOVED it. It was everything I wanted—simple and classy. I put a veil on and said Yes to the Dress.

The salesgirl walked out of the room to gather some paperwork and my mom and I noticed there were other dresses in the room. The owner asked the designer to send other samples. I took a peek at the dresses in the garment bags and turned to my mom and said “Why the heck would they send these? I said NO beads and NO lace."

My mom said, "why don’t you try one on just for fun?"

I pulled the dress out of the bag and slid it on. I turned around to look in the mirror and started to tear up. I looked over at my mom, who was also tearing up. I knew immediately that it was “The One.”

Without further ado, here’s a picture of my dress:

Ha! Did you really think I was going to show you a picture? No way José. The real dress will be unveiled after the wedding =)
