This past weekend, my boyfriend (Joe, hereinafter referred to as "J") and I headed to McHenry to visit his family. For those of you who don't know where McHenry is, it's located in Northeastern, Illinois, about an hour from Chicago.
It was my first time down there, so I was given a tour of McHenry, got to see where J grew up, and was lucky enough to see some pictures from when he was a younger lad. I was also able to spend time with his family. They are truly great people and made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. We had delicious meals, great conversations and many laughs. The weekend went by really quickly, but we all had a great time. I'm hoping that we get down there again before the end of the summer.
During the drive back, we took the scenic route through the country. We drove through Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, where we were greeted by several bright orange signs and cones, indicating detours and road closures, courtesy of the flooding that’s been going on in the Midwest. Being the adventurous people we are, we decided to get out of the car to take a few pictures. Seeing the banks of the river extend their natural boundaries by such large margins was unimaginable. It's hard to believe that some of the houses, buildings and land in general will never be the same. It's even harder to think about those people/businesses that don't have flood insurance. I can’t imagine being in their shoes. The picture posted above is a building and city steet in Fort Atkinson. It definitely serves as testimonial to how bad the flooding really is. I hope that the waters recede and people can get their lives back to "normal" as quickly as possible.

On a happier note, the sun is shining today and the temperature is a balmy 86 degrees. I’m going to explore my new neighborhood this evening and take a walk around Lake Nokomis with my friend, Amy. I’m hoping that I won’t inadvertently walk to Grand Ole Creamery, which is dangerously close to my house.
