My co-worker (D) recently asked me if J and I would be interested in going to a special mass, being said for our troops. J and I happily obliged, and I’m so happy we did.
D is being deployed in a couple of months, and is scheduled to be overseas for over a year.
He isn’t Catholic, but really wanted to go to the mass. The archbishop of St. Paul was scheduled to say the mass, and the flier said that he’d be handing out blessed St. Joan of Arc medallions to any troop member that attended the mass.
This morning when I came into work, D sent me an instant message saying:
“Thank you for coming. I know it was a far drive.”
I didn’t really know how to respond to his message. I basically responded with:
“J and I were happy to go---and it wasn’t a far drive at all.”
When you think about it, I only took about an hour and a half out of my day to attend the mass. It really fails in comparison to the time D will spend fighting for the liberties that I, and so many other people take for granted.
Being at that mass, surrounded by those brave men and women dressed in their army fatigues made me feel really proud. I’m proud to be an American and I’m especially proud of the people that fight for our rights and defend our country from harm.
