What’s Birth Order Have to Do With It?

A few months ago, my youngest sister called to tell me about a project she was doing for school. Basically it was a study on birth order. She relayed pieces of research she gathered, including stereotypical characteristics of each child within any given family.

Her project elevated my interest in learning more about birth order. I went to several websites and most of the credible sites included similar information regarding the first born:

First born: Confident, organized, smarter, responsible, scholarly, less open to new ideas, more likely to attend college to make more money than their siblings, and may be more stressed.

As the oldest child, I do believe some of the foregoing characteristics are accurate.

1. I’m totally organized. Some may think I have a minor case of O.C.D. Case in point, a picture of one of the closets in my home:

2. I’m not as open to new ideas. I’m working on this. Sometimes I have the attitude that it’s my way or the highway.

3. I’m smarter than my sisters. Haha! Just kidding =) I know they read my blog and wanted to see what they’d do if I said I was smarter than them. We all went to college and we’re each intelligent.

4. I get stressed out easily. I think a lot of people get stressed, but for the first born child, it seems they have more stress, because they need to pave the way.

I think it’s interesting that our birth order can play a part in pre-determining our traits. What place are you in the birth order?

i'm the oldest as well and i totally fit the description. i've always been the traditionalist of the family and don't like when things change. which is probably why i bawled my eyes out when my dad got remarried and i had to deal with a step parent.

Big surprise...I am the oldest as you may remember. I think oldest are easily stressed because the larger the family the more laid back parents have to be in order to keep their sanity - which drives us mad. And we had to fight every battle with our parents. They loose their will to fight with the 4th child.

I also find birth order interesting especially in marriages. Brent and I are both first borns but we get along well. Our OCD compliment each other's.

I'm a class first-born, also! That must be why J loves us so much. ;) I must say... your closet is my inspiration! I heart it.
