During the drive home, my arm started throbbing. J and I had dinner plans with my sister and her husband at Carmello's later that evening to celebrate Valentines Day.
Sadly, we had to opt out of going to dinner. Between J with his pink eye, and me with my injured arm, we decided it would be better if we didn't go. Instead, we decided to spend Valentines Day evening in the Emergency Room to get my arm checked.
We had to wait a little over two and a half hours to be seen by the doctor. After two rounds of x-rays, the doctor confirmed that I had a fracture. A radial head fracture to be exact. The radial head moves both in flexion and extension (bending) of the elbow joint, as well as rotation of the forearm. Therefore, injury to the radial head can affect all movements of the elbow.
The ER doc gave me a prescription to Vicodin and told me to visit a hand specialist as soon as possible.
Three weeks later, I still have pain, but the swelling and bruising have gone down significantly. I'm no longer wearing the splint (which made me look like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget). I still can't turn my hand and do simple things like round brush my hair, start my car (using my right hand), or lift heavy things. My range of motion is still messed up, but hopefully I'll continue to improve.
After all was said and done, it was definitely a Valentines Day to remember. I later found out that my parents said something to J along the lines of it being a horrible way to spend Valentines Day. J's response, "It was the first time both of us spent a Valentines Day being in love." I couldn't agree more.
