I’ve always been obsessed with severe weather and love when the local stations break into regularly scheduled programming to warn the public of dangerous storm cells approaching the vicinity.
Living in Minnesota, we see all types of crazy weather, including torrential downpours, blizzards, ice storms, tornados, etc. A couple of years ago, when driving back to Minneapolis from Wausau, Wisconsin with A and L, we saw a funky cloud hanging from the sky.
At first we didn’t think anything of it, but I said “Oh my gosh---that’s totally a wall cloud.” Well, my friends basically told me in a nice way that it wasn’t and questioned if I had a degree in meteorology.
Watching the weather channel as much as I do, I knew it was a wall cloud and that all the elements were perfect for a tornado. There was a warm system clashing with a cool system, and the back of the front formed the shape of a hook.
Sure enough, the wall cloud turned into a tornado. I asked my friends to pull over so we could get a better look. They obliged and we parked at an A&W Rootbeer restaurant along the freeway. Once we got out of the car, we couldn’t believe our eyes.
We knew it wasn’t coming towards us, otherwise we would have obviously run for cover. We found out later that it was an “F2” tornado, and thankfully, no one was hurt.
The best part of story is this...when I called my parents house, one of my sister’s answered the phone. I said “Hi, it’s K. Can I talk to mom? I’m standing about 2-miles away from a tornado!”
Sister “Um she’s busy. She’ll call you later.”
Needless to say, sister didn’t believe me and thought I was crying wolf. Luckily, I had the following pictures to prove I was telling the truth (I'm on the right in the first pic and A is on the left):

OMG - I cannot believe you posted the tornado pictures!!! Amazing! We were such crazy fools standing there in front of that wall-cloud-turned-actual-tornado! Of course, I will no longer question your undeniable sixth sense for meteorological phenomena! (did that even make sense??) Anyhoo...awesome that you posted this...I'm putting a link to this post on my blog!
I'll tell you a secret.....I was born in South Dakota and my dad still lives in Sioux Falls. I don't do tornadoes. I can handle every hurricane that gets thrown at us....tornadoes TERRIFY me!
